Origin of the Hawaiian Shirt September 11 2014
Exactly when the first Hawaiian shirts came on the scene is unknown but by the 1930's they were here to stay! It's thought that the original shirts were made by Japanese women repurposing traditional Japanese kimonos into mens shirts quickly finding themselves for sale to affluent travelers visiting the island paradise. Celebrities endorsed brands and they were soon available on the mainland for everyone to share the aloha spirit just when it was needed most as many Americans were working to recover from the great depression.
While the Hawaiian shirts enduring popularity throughout the years albiet with an infusion of flair from generation to generation is impressive, the most endearing quality of the Hawaiian shirt is the aloha it brings!
